Time Warner [don't bother me no more]

Today I will attempt to explain to you why I dislike Time Warner so much. It all started quite a few years ago but didn’t really get into my mind until I moved into my new apartment almost 2 years ago.

Since the day that I moved in I knew that Time Warner Cable was a complete rip off in the prices that it wants for just basic cable and neglects to tell you about the other low cost packages that are out there, such as “Lifeline Cable”, which only has the stations from 2 to 13 I think, but hey whatever it’s only like $7.99 a month. With this information handy and doing enough research in the market I have come to a conclusion that I don’t need nor want cable in this apartment. Even if I was getting it for free it would still cost too much.

So over the 2 years that I have been here I have been greeted no less than 4 times by a Time Warner representative asking me if I want cable. Now since I am such an asshole I take one single look at the representative no matter where they are from and ask them what they are selling, decline and go on about my way. Today was no different than usual but I am getting rather sick of people knocking on my door to ask me if I want something.

The main reason why cable isn’t worth it now are.

  1. Writers strike assures me that there will deffinatly be nothing good on.
  2. $50 a month for 78 channels is really pushing it.
  3. Sure Road Runner is faster than DSL but since RR uses an asyncronis transfer speed of “up to” 8.0m down and 38.5k up, DSL still has an advantage.
  4. Time Warner’s billing department has pissed me off before

I have been a user of Verizon DSL for the last year or so and I will say that sure it isn’t the best, but at least I get double the upload speed with 76.8k up with the expense of only 3m down. Some might say that this doesn’t sound logical and ask the question “wouldn’t you like to get files faster”? Well sure I would love to get files faster, wouldn’t we all, but when you host a small server out of your house you want to be able to get information to people as quickly as possible. For me it comes down to this, my readers are great, but when I need to FTP into my box to grab a paper or a project that I need I don’t want to wait that extra 8 minutes for the thing to finish. My time is valuable when I am away from home and I need to use my time sparingly. When I can get access to what I need faster, then it’s a bonus for me.

Now I will explain to you the ordeal I had with Time Warner some 4 years ago when I moved from one apartment to another. I had called them to cancel as the new apartment that I would be moving to already had high speed internet and that the service needed to be disconnected on said day. So everything went by without a hitch and I returned all their hardware and sent out my final bill. The bill was mailed out and they had received payment with the only problem being is that I over payed them on the last prorated month. A few months go by and I receive a refund check in the mail for the amount over payed of $38.50. I take my hard earned $38.50 and deposit it into the bank, when low and behold I get another check in the mail for the exact same amount. So being a few weeks later I take this check to the bank and deposit this also. So about another month goes by and I recieve a bill in the mail for the amount of, wiat for it…. wait for it….. $38.50 at this point I am starting to get pissed off. I mean I hadn’t had service with them at this point in almost 3 months. So I get on the horn and call them up and they said that I owed them $38.50 from my last bill. I politely informed the representative on the phone that I would not be paying this amount as there was some type of mix up with payments and asked to be transferred to a supervisor. The supervisor picked up very quickly but again informed me that I will have to pay the $38.50, again I told my story and felt that I was not in the wrong and would not be paying the $38.50.

Well to say the least they had to wait 2 full years before I paid them any of that, and the only reason I paid was so I could have Road Runner installed into yet another apartment. The moral of this story is… Time Warner can’t take a hint. I have been a customer of thiers in the past and I don’t think that I will again in the future. From the way that the sales reps push only certain products and talk down to budget conscious consumers is appalling.

So in conclusion…. Time Warner, please stop sending sales people, support techs, or any other person to my house. I don’t want your

  • Cable
  • Road Runner
  • Digital Phone

And I sure as hell don’t want your customer service either.
