Affordable High Speed Internet

Time Warner Road Runner

Within the last year here in the northeast, mainly the ones serviced by Time Warner Cable, have seen speed increases from 5mb up and 384k down go to 10mb down 1mb up with the rollout of DOCSIS 3. The speed increases where something that has been lacking in the area for some time with no additional cost for the new speed tiers.

I was lucky enough when we moved that there was a promotion for $29.99 for the first 12 months and at the expiry would be $44.99 to $49.99 a month thereafter. When I ordered service there was an immediate discrepancy with the speeds.

Tired of Beta Testing

Fedora

Over the last several years I have been using Fedora Linux on all my machines and have grown used to the way that things work. I like that it is not totally friendly and does require that you learn how to use it before you can actually do something meaningful. Recently I have attempted numerous times to upgrade to Fedora 12 on my server and have “boot failed”, “sleeping forever”, and while trying to correct this issue I was unable to correct it to get the system to boot. After a week or so I had to give up since I needed my server to provide the services that only it can provide.

So to make a long post short, I am totally tired of beta-testing Red Hat packages with Fedora. I am really just getting tired of drivers not working for ATI cards, which isn’t totally Fedora’s fault, and I am tired of having to tweak things to get a workaround to work itself around. To further frustrate me is that sometimes when you update the kernel things just decide to stop working.

So for a few weeks I switched to Ubuntu… and… well… yeah it’s user friendly… and kind of pretty… but it is WAY TOO NEWBIE for it to be a contender. Other than the polish of it that I don’t like I can’t wrap my head around not having a root user and only using sudo. To me using sudo like that is an abomination but love it or hate it, it is here to stay.
